Apprenticeships 'are mutually beneficial'

Apprenticeships can be the start of a great relationship

Both businesses and young people can benefit from apprenticeships, an expert has said.

James Hammill, head of apprenticeships and vocational training at Kaplan, wrote for HR Magazine that while the prospect can be daunting for both employers and school leavers, it is important to look at the advantages such a move can have.

For example, businesses can access government funding to help ease the financial burden of offering apprenticeships, while many are also impressed with the drive, dedication and enthusiasm apprentices show.

"By offering internships, work experience or apprenticeships, businesses across the UK can help young people, while helping their own business be more successful in 2011 and beyond," Mr Ham-mill noted.

According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), employment legislation and a lack of clarity make it difficult for firms to take apprentices on and equip young people with the skills they need for life in the workplace.
The body called for the government to do more to help them offer more opportunities.
