Boris Johnson backs formation of elite universities
The mayor backs elite institutions
The mayor of London Boris Johnson believes more elite universities should be established to cater for those who chose Oxford or Cambridge for their UK university entry but were ultimately unsuccessful.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Mr Johnson said he is behind plans to open a private £18,000-a-year institution in Bloomsbury that will focus on humanities subjects.
Called the New College of Humanities, it will be run by prominent academics including AC Grayling.
Mr Johnson stated that rather than replacing the current UK university system, such ventures will only strengthen it.
"This is not an attempt to replace the existing taxpayer-funded system or to 'privatise' the universities. It is about getting more cash into the teaching of the humanities and about additional elite provision," the mayor wrote.
According to data from Ucas, the number of people looking to secure UK university entry this year has risen by 1.4 per cent.
