Construction sector activity rebounds in February

Construction activity was up last month

The UK construction industry grew at its fastest pace in over eight months in February, a new report has shown.

According to the Markit/CIPS monthly survey of purchasing managers, the sector saw a jump from 53.7 in January to 56.6 last month.

The sector recorded a contraction of 2.5 per cent in the final quarter of 2010.

A notable increase in house building activity boosted the industry, while levels of commercial build-ing work remained strong and civil engineering work expanded at its fastest pace in three years.

David Noble, chief executive officer at CIPS, said that the results are positive but urged caution.

"A weather-beaten UK construction sector is showing signs of repair. The situation is still fragile, however, considering the likely impact of government cuts," he added.

According to figures from the Strategic Forum for Construction, the industry accounts for nearly ten per cent of UK gross domestic product.
