The government has been urged to highlight the benefits of undergoing training to people in the UK.
According to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), this would be far more beneficial than regulating on issues such as whether staff at small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should be entitled to ask for training, Personnel Today reports.
This, it warned, is because SMEs might be put off taking on new recruits if they are asked to comply with "overly burdensome" employment legislation.
However, the FSB said the government is in a position to make companies "socially aware of the benefits that training can bring to a business's competitiveness".
The organisation added that introducing more regulation would be counterproductive at a time when the onus is on the private sector to stimulate the UK's economy.
This comes after the Association of Graduate Recruiters reported that the number of people applying for graduate jobs has reached a record level this year.
