Government move may offer more options to those seeking university entry in the UK

There may be more options for people coming from overseas who are looking for university entry in the UK if publishing company Pearson is given the power to award degrees.

In a move that could be seen as a way to combat a large number of applications for entry to higher education and in the wake of rises in tuition fees, the proposals might see the system open up to private providers, the BBC reports.

Pearson owns the exam awarding body Edexcel, but a change in the law would be required for it to grade degree certificates, which the coalition is said to be considering.

President of the UK arm of the company Rob Bristow told the news source that the firm wants to be given permission to award the higher education awards, noting their programmes would meet rigorous standards and be demanding of students.

An article in the Irish Echo noted more employers are now placing an emphasis on past practical work experience an individual has done, in addition to their educational achievements.
