Graduates can benefit from internships in a number of ways, as can the businesses which take them on, it has been suggested.
Paul Hannon, director of research and education at the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship, stated that the skills picked up from such placements can contribute to a university leaver's commercial acumen.
He stated that any experience graduates can gain in small businesses will prove invaluable in the long term, as it is these individuals who will drive the sectors moving forward and so they need ex-posure to the workings of their chosen industry.
"Internships are a valuable contribution to delivering business and enterprise skills as part of a wider portfolio of entrepreneurial learning for students and graduates," Mr Hannon added.
The Federation of Small Businesses recently called for the government's current paid Graduate Internship Scheme to be extended beyond its March deadline, as it has been a successful initiative.
