Graduates 'will emerge into a two-speed employment market'

Published: 07/04/2011

Graduates face a tough time

Those graduating from university this year will find themselves entering a two-tier employment market.

That is the view of Charlie Ball, director of research at the Higher Education Careers Service Unit, who stated that the stagnant graduate employment market mirrors the situation in the wider economy.

He said that there are conflicting reports concerning the jobs market as far as university leavers are concerned, although public sector positions are few and far between, meaning there is more focus on private sector work.

"The public sector has been expecting severe cuts or a slowdown in recruitment for some time and so we are expecting that that will be a less important area for graduates," Mr Ball went on to add.

According to research by Incomes Data Services, 70 per cent of employers said they would be freezing their recruitment rates this year.

The study also found that starting salaries for graduates are projected to decline in real terms for the third consecutive year in 2011.
