The mayor of London Boris Johnson has expressed his happiness at surpassing the target of creating 20,000 apprenticeship opportunities.
Mr Johnson said the milestone had been reached three months ahead of schedule and that it had been beaten by almost 50 per cent in terms of the number of places established.
The mayor and his 'Apprenticeship Ambassador' Tim Campbell launched a major campaign last November urging some of the capital's largest organisations to invest in opportunities for young people.
Mr Johnson thanked those organisations which responded to the scheme.
"In difficult times it is vital that we do all we can to create jobs and opportunities for the next generation and that we invest in measures that will help us recover more quickly and convincingly," he added.
According to figures from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, the government has surpassed its expectations for the number of adult apprenticeships launched in the 2010-2011 financial year.
