Number of 'neets' hits record high
The number of neets is at its highest since 2005
The number of young people not in education, employment or training (neets) is at its highest since 2005, new figures have shown.
According to statistics revealed by the Department of Education, 938,000 16 to 24-year-olds were classed as neets at the end of 2010, while the proportion was up among 18 to 24-year-olds as well.
The number of 16 to 18-year-old neets was down, with more of this demographic in education and training but not employment.
A spokesman for the Department for Education, said that the government is keen to address the issue and has a plan in place.
"It is young people who bear the brunt in any recession or downturn, which is why we are so focused on tackling the deficit and promoting growth," the representative stated.
Recent data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that youth unemployment rose by 66,000 in the three months to the end of December.
