Record number of A* grades predicted
A* grades are set to rise
A record number of A* grades are expected to be awarded to those hoping for UK university entry this year, with one in ten set to earn the mark.
Professor Alan Smithers, of the Centre for Education and Employment Research at Buckingham University, said that teachers and students are now more aware of what it takes to achieve the top score.
Last year, one in 12 entries achieved an A* grade, with the expert claiming that it is the new A.
"One might expect that it (A*) will go up by nearly one percentage point, maybe even more. Twenty-five years ago, ten per cent got an A. This year it's likely to be nine per cent or more getting an A*," professor Smithers added.
Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, said recently that the demand for places from those preparing UK university entry this year "is likely to be unprecedented".
