Retrofit project could employ 100,000 workers

New jobs will be created by the retrofit

Up to 100,000 workers could be employed by 2015 as part of the government's Green Deal initiative, which has seen the launch of a pioneering project to upgrade the UK's social homes take place in Manchester today (March 8th).

Unveiled by housing minister Grant Shapps, the development intends to make properties more comfortable and warmer to live in, as well as cheaper to run, with improvements such as better heating systems and solid wall insulation to be added to 9,000 residences in the northern city.

In all, 2,500 dwellings will initially be upgraded, paving the way for Greater Manchester's 260,000 social homes to participate in the Green Deal scheme.

Mr Shapps remarked: "The scheme in Manchester will save tenants hundreds of pounds on energy bills, and create hundreds of jobs for local people."

It follows the introduction of a new £10 million funding package by the Scottish government to help people acquire skills and training and find employment.
