Universities minister welcomes student finance taskforce

Published: 17/06/2011

Mr Willetts has backed the taskforce

Understanding financial arrangements and entitlements is a key part of university preparation and a new taskforce has been set up to ensure those applying for higher education are aware of how the system operates.

The new, independent body will be chaired by Martin Lewis from moneysavingexpert.com and Wes Streeting, former president of the National Union of Students.

Minister for universities and science David Willetts has welcomed the taskforce, saying that it is crucial those preparing for university entry are clear about how the new system will operate from 2012 onwards.

"The independent group has the expertise and reach to communicate to a huge number of prospective students, families and teachers as well as to universities," he added.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph recently, mayor of London Boris Johnson gave his backing to the formation of private universities, saying that they will strengthen rather than hinder the provision of higher education in the UK.
