Training 'good for business and staff'

Training 'good for business and staff'

The benefits of training for both businesses and employees have been highlighted by an expert.

Sylvia Constantine, former IBA Start up Business Adviser of the Year, explained enhancing the talents of staff is an "absolute imperative" for businesses.

She was commenting on the extension of a UK government scheme that gives workers the right to request time off to train.

Legislation currently applies to firms employing more than 250 people, but companies of all sizes will be affected from April of next year.

Ms Constantine suggested that while smaller businesses may be concerned about the logistics of covering absence while people are being trained, there are real advantages.

"It's as important for the owner-managers as it is for the employees," she said. "Every business will get some benefit from having a highly trained and skilled workforce."

Last week, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills announced it is reviewing various regulations in a bid to reduce burdens on companies, with issues concerning the right to request time to train included in the consultation.

"It's as important for the owner-managers as it is for the employees," she said. "Every business will get some benefit from having a highly trained and skilled workforce."
