Adaptability-boosting education and training 'should be included in vocational courses'

Vocational courses should be tailored to teach participants practical skills and build up competences that will be valuable in a working environment.

Jane Artess, director of research at the Higher Education Careers Service Unit, says such schemes would be more effective if they incorporated different elements.

The expert suggests it is wise "to ensure that vocational courses include education and training that enables students to respond and adapt and utilise their learning in a very broad range of employment contexts".

At the moment, a lack of adaptability in those who complete the learning projects may be seen by employers as a significant weakness.

Secretary of state for education Michael Gove has recently asked Professor Alison Wolf to review the current state of vocational education.

The aim of this is said to be to identify what can be done to ensure vocational courses remain as beneficial to the young people completing them as possible.
