Some 4.434 million disabled people were employed in urban areas of China by the end of 2009, it has been revealed.
Furthermore, 17.57 million disabled people in rural areas had found stable jobs, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The figures were compiled in a white paper entitled China's Human Resources, issued by the Information Office of the State Council.
It highlighted that the government is formulating an overall plan to provide work for the country's disabled individuals and guarantee their legal rights.
An initiative has already been put in place to give a tax preference to employers who have a quarter of their staff made up of disabled people.
The government is also encouraging disabled citizens to explore their employment options and offering advice to welfare enterprises.
China has more than a billion workers in total yet only 780 million are employed, according to Agence France-Presse.
"As China's urbanisation quickens, employment pressures from the many surplus rural labourers are getting bigger and bigger," said Yi Chengji, spokesman for the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
