Some 167 youngsters have benefited from an employment scheme implemented on the Wirral 12 months ago.
According to the Wirral Borough Council, the Wirral Apprentice programme has provided a career path for a large number of young people on the peninsula - which sits in between Liverpool and Wales - in more than 100 local companies.
The council noted the scheme has been praised by politicians and business leaders alike, who "hold it up as an example of how a local authority can best use its resources to help the private sector during the difficult economic climate".
Funded by the National Apprenticeship Scheme, the operation was implemented with the aim of helping the borough's small to medium-sized businesses achieve growth, while offering employment opportunities in the process.
A year since its inception, firms such as MB Wirral, Typhoo Tea, Onsite Computer Solutions and T-Systems UK have benefited from the scheme.
Councillor Andrew Hodgson, cabinet member for regeneration and planning strategy, commented there is still more work to be done in this area and encouraged employers who are not aware of the advantages of taking on apprentices to get in touch.
