Young people with little confidence and a lack of qualifications are being pushed further from employment by the number of graduates currently looking for work, it has been noted.
A Prince's Trust spokeswoman stated skills and assurance can be developed by those currently being frozen out of the jobs market, if provided with adequate support.
"Young people who are out of work can suffer long-term and irreversible effects on their health, happiness and overall wellbeing," she said.
Psychological scarring is more likely to occur the longer someone remains out of work due to a lack of self-esteem and the emotional instability it can cause, she added.
The spokeswoman stated this could have the knock-on effect of producing a generation of young Brits who are debilitated and therefore less likely to be able to find a job in the future.
Earlier this week, the Trades Union Congress reported the UK may be heading for a crisis in terms of employment, with a particular concern being the lack of work opportunities currently accessible to younger individuals because they do not have the required skills or experience.
