There are simply not enough jobs available for those who need them and instead of "vilifying the unemployed", the coalition should be creating work opportunities in order to help the economy grow, it has been noted.
The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) was commenting after secretary of state for work and pensions Iain Duncan Smith said individuals out of employment in Methyr, South Wales should be "getting on the bus" and heading to Cardiff to find a job.
However, figures obtained by the PCS reveal there are 15,000 unemployed in the Welsh capital competing for 1,700 jobs, meaning there are approximately nine individuals to every vacancy.
"These figures prove it is not a question of people not being willing to work, there simply are not enough jobs for them to do," stated the PCS, adding there is unlikely to be any improvement in the situation because of the planned spending cuts.
