Work experience is being offered in administration roles at the Home Office as it attempts to make thousands of redundancies following the impact of the comprehensive spending review, it has been noted.
According to the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), there are currently 20 people working with no pay at the department, which is looking for ways to cut 7,000 jobs.
The posts are being offered to individuals who have not graduated, are between the ages of 18 and 24 and have been claiming jobseekers allowance for more than 13 weeks.
PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "Work experience clearly has a role in helping people get back to work, but the government should be investing in our public services and creating proper, secure jobs."
The PCS has over 300,000 members - making it the firth largest trade union in the UK - and campaigns for decent pensions for all, fair pay and conditions and equality in and beyond the workplace.
