A lack of jobs is to blame for the 2.5 million Brits who are currently out of work, as there are five people chasing every vacancy at present, it has been argued.
Trades Union Congress (TUC) general secretary Brendan Barber said the number of jobless people is not a result of the nation being full of "workshy scroungers", but these people are the victims of a society that is not offering enough opportunities to find work.
"The government should stop blaming unemployed people for their predicament and start creating rather than cutting jobs," he noted, adding that since January 2008 the number of people out of employment has more than doubled.
Mr Barber was speaking after figures released by the Office for National Statistics revealed almost 250,000 UK adults have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for a year or longer.
Earlier this month, he observed that the impact of the comprehensive spending review will lead to more individuals joining the dole queue, making it much harder to cut the number of people without a job.
