Sainsbury's will open six new food colleges to allow employees who deal with hot food, meat and fish and work within one of the cafes to train, it has been announced.
Offering development in areas such as customer service, knife skills and product knowledge, the supermarket said it expects 8,500 staff to take part in one of the courses each year.
Centres will be located in Hempstead Valley in Kent, Calcot, London Colney, Oldbury, Bradford and Murrayfield.
The announcement follows the retailer's plans to create 500 vacancies within the business in 2011, partly as a result of expected expansion over the next 12 months.
"I am thrilled to be able to announce the creation of these new jobs on our counters and cafes, particularly in the current economic climate," said Gwyn Burr, Sainsbury's customer service director.
Last week, Asda said it will offer 7,500 employment opportunities next year as it intends to increase its home shopping service and open new stores.
