An engineering degree in the UK could ensure students are well placed to capitalise on the current positive trend in manufacturing, as output in December rose at its fastest pace for more than 16 years.
The Markit/CIPS manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 58.3 last month, higher than experts' predictions of 57.0 and above November's 57.5 reading, Reuters reports.
Taking an engineering degree in the UK could therefore allow individuals to gather the correct training and make them well placed for work experience in London and other urban centres.
Rob Dobson, senior economist at Markit and author of the survey, commented: "The UK manufacturing sector saw a truly spectacular end to 2010," but noted rising costs were "the other stand-out figure".
Manufacturing in Europe also jumped, with the Markit Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index advancing to 57.1 as new orders and improved labour markets helped the sector expand.
