Durham University is exploring the idea of including a work experience in the UK component to its undergraduate degrees and one expert has claimed that such a move would be beneficial for students.
Professor Anthony Forster, pro-vice chancellor for education at the establishment, told JournalLive.co.uk that the proposal is part of a wider review into the curriculum on offer to students.
He stated that the move would not detract from the academic standards Durham University has set itself in recent years and that it was looking to build on this with the addition of different educational experiences.
"We are exploring how to develop a framework that will allow academic credit to be awarded for student employment or short-term community and work-based placements that have involved the application or development of academic knowledge and skills," professor Forster added.
Several other establishments are considering the similar moves, including Leicester University and University College London.
