Technology manufacturers are the most confident businesses in Britain and almost half are planning recruitment drives over the next 12 months.
A study by General Electric (GE) found that 71 per cent of hi-tech firms are optimistic about the next 12 months, despite the fact that a quarter recorded double-digit growth last year, the Independent reports.
More than 48 per cent of firms questioned said they plan to hire in 2011, with the average expansion of the workforce around 5.7 per cent.
Mark Elborne, president and chief executive of GE in the UK, told the newspaper that the results suggest the next 12 months will be fruitful for tech companies.
"Many of those surveyed had a positive 2010 and feel confident about 2011, particularly when discussing the potential in export markets," he added.
Elsewhere, 600 jobs are to be created in York when approval is granted for a development project on the site of a Nestle chocolate factory, the Yorkshire Post reports.
