Many students who come to learn English in the UK 'go on to university'

It is a common misconception that those who come to the UK to learn English do so with the intention of staying in the country illegally, with many going on to higher education, it has been claimed.

Adell Mitchell, who runs Live Language school in Glasgow, told Herald Scotland that plans outlined by the government to tighten visa restrictions will have a detrimental effect on the country and could see language schools forced to shut their doors.

She stated that those in power are tarring perfectly honest and legal institutions with the same brush as those organisations which abuse the current system and said such an approach was unfair.

"The [students] who come to our school either go on to university or go home," Ms Mitchell told the newspaper.

Cambridge MP Julian Huppert has said recently that plans by the coalition government to extend the length of stay permitted to overseas students who come to the UK to learn English is a move which benefits all parties.
