Taking on interns and offering people work experience can deliver great benefits to commercial organisations, it has been claimed.
Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum of Private Business, said that in these austere times, employing new staff puts small firms in particular under greater financial pressure, however, with internships they can avoid this problem.
However, it is not just from a financial perspective that companies can benefit.
"My personal opinion is that interns can be extremely valuable, they can bring freshness, youth, enthusiasm and ideas. Whenever you make staffing decisions, there is a cost issue but I don't think that is a concern when taking on interns," Mr McCabe stated.
He added that those who have to fund an internship placement themselves will find it difficult to do so if they come from a deprived background.
Michael Rabone, HR manager at Rick Stein's The Seafood Restaurant, told the Sun recently that work experience is a chance for young people to shine.
