Welfare to work schemes in Australia are currently unsuccessful because they do not tap into the desire to become a part of mainstream society.
That is according to Tony Nicholson, executive director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, who was writing for the Sydney Morning Herald and highlighted the importance of getting more people who are able to work into employment.
He noted the recent Federal Government election underlined the need for this to occur if the country is to build on its economic stability and grow further.
However, the industry commentator stated the nation's current welfare to work system is "insensitive to the new risks and opportunities the modern market economy presents to the disadvantaged".
As a result, Mr Nicholson said he believes more emphasis should be put on "creating a line of sight between [people's] current circumstances and a decent job".
He added research by his organisation - established in 1930 - shows the formation of an intermediate labour market is crucial to getting more people into work.
