British companies should write young people off at their peril, according to one industry expert.
John Hannett, general secretary of the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers, recently commented that school leavers and students are the UK's future wage earners and need to be given a chance, even if the economy is currently going through a difficult period.
He added: "The more apprenticeships and the more encouragement given to employers to take young people on I think will pay good dividends for them."
Mr Hannett went on to observe this will also provide companies with loyal workers who feel "they were supported in difficult times by the business".
Furthermore, the specialist praised the Low Pay Commission for recognising apprenticeships as part of its remit.
His remarks follow data from the Office for National Statistics, which showed the employment rate in Britain for those aged between 16 and 64 in the three months to July increased by 0.4 per cent.
