North-east businesses have been encouraged to consider offering places to trainees within their company at what is a challenging time for firms in all sectors.
George Ritchie, apprenticeship ambassador for the region, said the schemes are vital to the local economy and the future success of enterprises in the area, nebusiness.co.uk reports.
"We employ apprentices because they provide us with loyal, motivated and enthusiastic employees who return our investment in them by providing key benefits to our business," he noted.
Mr Ritchie, who is also senior vice-president of Sembcorp Utilities UK, was speaking after his firm joined a national campaign to increase the number of traineeships offered in the region.
Last month, Sylvia Perrins, chief executive of the national skills academy, urged businesses in the financial services industry to apply for funding made available for work training programmes.
Her comments came after the coalition's comprehensive spending review announced there would be an extra £250 million invested in the schemes to increase skills and help the economy grow.
