A Newcastle construction firm expects to create 1,000 new jobs over the next two years after it was awarded the contract to build a North Sea drilling structure.
Offshore Group Newcastle (OGN) won the rights to build the oil platform after agreeing a £150 million deal with US company Apache.
Dennis Clark, chairman of OGN, stated: "The North Sea oil and gas market is coming back to life and infrastructure investment looks set to increase, which is great for Tyneside and the north-east region."
Energy minister Charles Hendry welcomed the announcement, noting that in addition to providing employment opportunities in the area, the project will play an important role in ensuring the UK has a constant energy supply.
Last week, supermarket giant Asda announced it plans to create 7,500 extra jobs in 2011 and would also be offering 10,000 seasonal work opportunities and 15,000 retail apprenticeships for people between the ages of 14 and 16.
