Companies taking on apprenticeships could find their business benefits from the work training programmes as they produce staff who understand what life is like in employment, one expert has noted.
Josie Perry, marketing and communications director at the National Apprenticeship Service, said: "They will know how to work with colleagues and understand the pressures that you get in the workplace, so they are already trained for the jobs market."
She added that many of the individuals who go through an apprenticeship will be retained by the firm that have trained them and they will prove to be a valued member of the workforce.
Businesses benefit from taking on individuals who train while they are employed, as they teach people skills that are relevant to the industry, Ms Perry observed.
Last week, the London Greater Authority announced mayor of the capital Boris Johnson and his apprenticeship ambassador Tim Campbell would be personally writing to firms across the capital and urging them to create 20,000 new work-training opportunities.
