It is vital that more support is given to young people to help them find a job in the current economic downturn.
This is according to a study carried out by the Prince's Trust, which found that 48 per cent of those between the ages of 16 and 25 who are out of work believe that not having a job has had an impact on their mental health.
In addition, the Prince's Trust Macquarie Youth Index also revealed that people in education or training programmes are significantly happier than those who are not.
Speaking to the BBC, the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) stressed that its Work Programme, which will come into force in 2011, will "give people the tailored support they need to move them into these jobs and stay there".
It added that the government is "focused on restoring the economy and supporting private sector jobs growth".
Earlier this month, employment minister Chris Grayling commented that the Work Programme will "transform the welfare landscape in Britain", with DWP describing it as the biggest employment initiative for decades.
