The proposal from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development that those on an internship in the UK should be paid a training wage could be a win-win situation for both businesses and those looking to gain experience in the workplace.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, said that provided organisations can absorb the cost then the idea has some merit.
He stated that there are a number of variables to consider, including the number of interns a business takes on and for how long after the initial three-month period they plan to retain them.
"Providing the organisation can absorb the cost, I guess it is a win-win situation for both parties. Mentally it is better to work for something than nothing," Mr Flaxton noted.
According to a recent survey by the National Council for Work Experience, 40 per cent of graduates believe employers value relevant work experience more than academic qualifications.
