Apprenticeships have been fundamental to the success of Barcelo Hotels, with the company's HR director urging others in the hospitality sector to offer young people the chance to learn on the job.
Des Lawson stated that bosses at the firm realised there were certain skills gaps which needed to be addressed and to tackle the issue head on, they decided that equipping people with the skills themselves was the best way to build a competent workforce.
He said that the apprenticeship framework these days is much more flexible than in years gone by, with executives able to tailor them to make sure they address the specific needs of the business.
Mr Lawson urged others in the hospitality industry to follow suit, as the returns can be significant.
"My advice to other employers is to commit to apprenticeships - the benefits far outweigh the costs and generally we see direct returns within 12 months," he went on to say.
Josie Perry, marketing and communications director at the National Apprenticeship Service, said recently that apprenticeships are a good way of preparing staff to take on tasks in the workplace.
