Microsoft reveals London apprenticeship drive

Technology giant Microsoft has revealed plans to create more than 1,000 apprenticeships in London over the next three years.

The news comes after the mayor of London Boris Johnson and business secretary Vince Cable launched National Apprenticeship Week in the City and urged firms in the capital to do their bit to get more young people into work and equipped with the skills needed to boost the economy.

Stephen Uden, head of skills and economic affairs at Microsoft, said that apprenticeships are a great way of helping people get into work and learn skills which will serve them well throughout their working lives.

"London is the engine room of the UK economy and over the next three years Microsoft intends to deliver 1,000 apprenticeships in the capital through our network of partners," he added.

There was further good news after Virgin Media revealed similar plans, pledging to create 90 apprenticeships this year.

Des Lawson, HR director at Barcelo Hotels, recently lauded apprenticeships and the impact they can have on firms operating in the catering industry.
