Not going to university 'can be a blessing'

Not going to university 'can be a blessing'

Those who have been unsuccessful with their UK university entry this year should not despair, as it could work out in their favour.

Jason Borg, student engagement officer at, said that apprenticeships and foundation degrees are just two of the alternatives young people could explore if they have missed out on going into higher education.

He gave the example of the National Grid which will pay for successful applicants to complete a foundation degree.

"They are all vocational apprenticeships where you can get your foot in the door with an employer, you get employee status so they're paying you to learn and earn," Mr Borg stated.

One of the advantages of this is that young people will be working with someone who is an expert in the industry and can pass on relevant information which will stand apprentices in good stead for the future.

The Learning a Living report from Working Links recently revealed that 80 per cent of employers believe apprenticeships are crucial to reducing youth unemployment in the UK.
